Client Right #10 & Behavioral Intervention Training
Client Right #10: "A right to make choices in their own lives, including, but not limited to, where and with whom they live, their relationships with people in their community, the way they spend their time including education, employment, and leisure, and pursuit of their personal future, and program planning and implementation."
Behavior Intervention Training:
Managing clients and their behaviors is something that we deal with on a daily basis and our goal for every day is to help them to be successful. As Direct Support Professionals (DSP's) we can help clients succeed by helping to increase their independence and functional performance. For example, we can help them to meet their daily goals, help make them feel good about themselves, and help them to learn new things.
The way we can help is to acknowledge that everything is a behavior. So our goal is to replace behaviors we want to decrease with those behaviors we want to increase.
1) Explain what ABC stands for?
2) When should you intervene to prevent a behavior? Give an example of how to change a behavior?

A= Antecedent
B- Behavior
C- Consequence
Get rid of triggers if possible
Target independent
Reinforce behavior we want and punish behavior we don't want
Sensory schedule
Antecedent- What happens before
Behavior- What did the client do
Consequence- What happened after
You should intervene before the clients behavior become more aggressive or distressed
If they are refusing to take a shower approach calmly use respectful tone & offer choices
Staying in the bathroom for hours check on the clients make sure they’re safe & document the duration & responses
ABC stands for:
Antecedent-what happens before the behavior?
Behavior-what is the behavior?
Consequence-what happens after the behavior?
Try to intervene even before a behavior occurs.
Some examples could be to balance out activities throughout the day or have some incentive plans/rewards charts, etc. Get rid of any triggers that you know will cause a client to have a behavior. We want to reinforce the good behaviors and punish the behaviors we do not want.
A stand for Antecedent
B-behavior
C- consequence
In the behavior prevention program approach,
you can identify their expectation and teach the appropriate behavior directly, it includes modelling providing practice, rewarding good behavior, and having them to monitor their progress
Healthy behavior changes can target a person's physical, emotional, or social health. Some examples of habits to improve mental health include:
Getting proper exercise.
Eating nutritious foods.
Practicing good sleep hygiene.
Socializing with supportive friends and family.
Taking medications as prescribed.
