Medication Training
In an Adult Residential Facility, medication administration means that we centrally store medications, we give residents their medications to take when prescribed, we reorder their medications when necessary and we document when they refuse them. Medication assistance DOES NOT mean that we force the residents to take their medications, we give them injections, or we put a pill in their mouth.

2) What is a PRN?
PRN stands for as needed. It can be a prescribed medication or an over the counter medication.
The six rights of safe medication administration:
1. Right patient 4
* Ask the patient their first and last name
* Does the order match the patient?
2. Right medication 4
* Does the medication label match the order?
* Be vigilant with look-alike and sound-alike medications
3. Right dose 4
* Does the strength and dosage match the order?
* Is it half, whole or multiple tablets?
4. Right time 4
* Does the administration time match the order?
* Before administering a PRN medication, ensure specified time interval has passed
5. Right route 4
* Does the route match the order?
* Can this be crushed or mixed in other substances?
* Have any transdermal patches been removed?

PRN: A PRN medication os administered when the service user presents with a defined intermittent or short-term condition i.e. not given as a regular daily dose pr at specific times

Medicines that are taken “as needed” are known as “PRN” medicines. “PRN” is a Latin term that stands for “pro re nata,” which means “as the thing is needed.” It's important to know the difference between daily and “as needed” medicines.
