Client Right #9: "A right to be free from hazardous procedures."


Medications are substances used to prevent or treat an illness. Knowing about medications and how to assist individuals in using them is vital to the health and well-being of those you support.

Safety is the #1 priority. Following the Seven Rights each time you assist an individual with self-administration of medication is the best way for the Direct Support Professional (DSP) to prevent medication errors.

Medication training: Seven rights that are the most important to remember when assisting with self-administration of medication are as follows: 1) the right person- it is important to identify the right individual 2) the right medication- read the label three times and compare it to the MAR to make sure it is correct 3) the right dosage- read label for the correct dosage and compare it to the MAR, be alert to any changes 4) the right time- medications must be taken at a specific time of the day 5) the right route- make sure it’s the correct route or way to take the medication 6) the right reason- every medication has a condition/reason for why it is prescribed 7)…

Right Person - be sure that person has meds.

Right medication -make sure it’s the correct medication

Right time - make sure the time is correct. It can morning, afternoon, or night.

Right dose- verify the dose matches with the quick mar dose

Right route - make sure the meds is being taking the right way.

Right reason- make sure the med is being given for the right reason.

Right documentation - make sure the meds are documented correctly and on time
