Client Right #9: "A right to be free from hazardous procedures."
Medications are substances used to prevent or treat an illness. Knowing about medications and how to assist individuals in using them is vital to the health and well-being of those you support.
Safety is the #1 priority. Following the Seven Rights each time you assist an individual with self-administration of medication is the best way for the Direct Support Professional (DSP) to prevent medication errors.

• Right Person
• Meaning: Make sure the medication is given to the correct individual.
• Why: Giving medication to the wrong person can cause serious harm or even be life-threatening. Always confirm identity (name, photo, or other identifiers).
• Right Medication
• Meaning: Check the medication label against the medication administration record (MAR) or prescription.
• Why: Some medications look or sound alike. Giving the wrong medication can lead to dangerous drug interactions or ineffective treatment.
• Right Dose
• Meaning: Confirm the exact amount (tablet, mL, mg, etc.) prescribed.
• Why: Too much or too little medication can cause overdose, underdose, or no therapeutic effect.
