When a resident goes AWOL that means they leave or are absent without notice or permission.
Elopement is an act of leaving a safe area, done by a person with a mental disorder or cognitive impairment. Resident and staff safety is most important.
1) Give two examples of things/incentives that can be said or done to prevent AWOL from happening. Describe how you would manage an AWOL situation.





Two examples of things/ incentives can be said of done to prevent AWOL
- communication with the clients
- Give the client opinion to prevent from leaving.
MANAGING AN AWOL SITUATION
- Take note of directions and what the clients is wearing.
- Track any other identifying information.
-Attempt to shadow distance
- communicate with co- worker
- Contact local law enforcement.
- Contact management
- Prepare proper documentation for the law enforcement.
- Compete SIR/ UII after receiving the event number from officers.
Some incentives could be:
Giving client a cigarette to cool down, watching a movie with them, engaging a client into an activity such as cooking or helping them to organize their room, playing a video game or board game with them, going for a walk with them outside, engaging them into a conversation about something they are interested in. These are just a few examples.
