Seizure Training- How to help a client

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It can cause changes in your behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness.

In the blog section, please describe steps/things on how you would help a client during a seizure. List things that are important to do and also list things that you DO NOT want to do during a seizure.





Things that are important to Do
- Stay calm and remain with the person.
- Keep them safe and protect them from injury.
- Reassure the person until they recover.
- If they have food in their mouth roll them onto their side immediately.
Not to Do
-Don't hold the person down or try to stop his or her movements.
- Don't put anything in the person mouth.
-Don't try to give mouth to mouth breath.
-Don't offer the person water or food he/ she fully alert.
Important to:
- Stay calm and track time
- protect client from possible hazards
- turn client on his/her side
- cushion head
- utilize VNS if available
- contact emergency services for seizure lasting more than two minutes, if client is injured, or normal breathing does not resume
- after seizure remain with client until awareness of surroundings is fully regained
- provide emotional support
- document seizure activity
DO NOT:
- put anything in the client's mouth
- hold down or restrain
- attempt to give oral medications, food or drink during a seizure
When a client is having a seizure remember to stay calm and track the length of the seizure.
You want to look around and make sure there is nothing sharp or hazardous around and move those items away from them to protect them from possible injuries.
Turn them on their side and cushion their head if possible.
Remain with the individual until they have regained awareness of their surroundings.
Give them emotional support and document the seizure.
Do NOT put anything in their mouth or try to hold them down during a seizure.
If you're with someone having a Seizure Do Not Panic.
Cushion thier head if they're on the ground.
Turn them on to thier side after thier convulsions stop.
Stay with them and talk to them until they recover.
Note the time the Seizure started and finish.
Seizure Considered A MEDICAL EMERGENCY.
Call 911 if the person has difficulty breathing or waking after the Seizure or if the Seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
To do :
> stay calm and remain w/ the person

> reassure the person until they recover
> if they have food in their mouth roll them onto their side immediately
