Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it makes as well as it should. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.
Many people will be able to handle all or almost all routine diabetes care by themselves. However, some people, because of age, developmental level, or inexperience, will need help from staff.
Please answer questions in the blog section:
1) In the case where assistance is needed, what are the proper steps for using a glucose meter?
2) As a caregiver, how can you help a client to manage his/her diabetes?

Proper steps using a glucose
Use a lancet to prick the finger squeeze from the base of the finger gently place a small amount of blood onto the test strip. Place the strip in the meter after a few seconds the reading will appear
Help them manage their diabetes check blood sugar, make healthy foods, help them go for a walk
Proper steps for using a glucose meter are:
-Wash your hands with soap and warm water and dry completely or clean the area with alcohol and dry completely.
-Prick the fingertip with a lancet.
-Hold the hand down and hold the finger until a small drop of blood appears; catch the blood with the test strip.
-Follow the instructions for inserting the test strip and using the SMBG meter.
-Record the test result. Normal range is 70-140
When helping a client to manage his/her diabetes it may be beneficial to have certain exercise requirements for them to follow and also making sure their meals and snacks are healthy. Also making sure they are not consuming too many soft drinks, etc.
Wash hands
Gloves
Set meter up
Put Lancet strip in meter it will turn on

Staying away from sugary snacks
Turn on the glucometer. This is usually done by inserting a test strip. The glucometer screen will tell you when it's time to put blood on the strip.
Use the lancing device to pierce the side of your finger, next to the fingernail (or another recommended location). This hurts less than lancing the pads of your fingers.
Squeeze your finger until it has produced a sufficient-size drop.
Place the drop of blood on the strip.
Blot your finger with the alcohol prep pad to stop the bleeding.
Wait a few moments for the glucometer to generate a reading.
