Food Handling

A food handler is an employee who is involved in the preparation, storage, service or handling of food products. Anyone who prepares food or who may come in contact with food products, food utensils or equipment is a food handler. As a food handler, we need to understand and follow the rules of food safety to prevent anyone from getting sick.

What can make people sick from food, is caused by eating and drinking contaminated food. These harmful germs can include bacteria, parasites, and viruses, They are mostly found in raw chicken, fish and eggs. But they can spread to any type of food. How you can prevent food- borne illness? Clean. Wash your hands often and always before you touch food. Keep knives, cutting boards and counters clean. You can wash the with hot soapy water. Cook. Make sure that meat, chicken, fish and eggs are fully cooked.

There are a few ways food can make people sick. One of the main reasons people get sick from food is the preparation of food. Its important to keep your cooking area clean and disinfected from germs. Making sure you wash your hands before preparing a meal is crucial. Additionally, if you are sick or were near someone with a sickness could cause you to pass on those germs so be sure to stay away from cooking if that is the case.

Food can make people sick because of several types of

germs, also known as pathogens. These germs include

viruses, protozoa, parasites and bacteria. For example,

Hepatitis A is an illness caused by a virus. If food handlers do

not wash their hands after using the toilet, they can

contaminate food with the Hepatitis A virus.


 - Wash your hands before you begin working and

whenever they might be contaminated. Be sure to wash

your hands after coughing, sneezing, touching raw

meat or poultry, and especially after using the toilet.
