Living with Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it makes as well as it should. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

Many people will be able to handle all or almost all routine diabetes care by themselves. However, some people, because of age, developmental level, or inexperience, will need help from staff.

1) In the case where assistance is needed, what are the proper steps for using a glucose meter?

2) As a caregiver, how can you help a client to manage his/her diabetes?

First; wash your hands and then set out all of your materials (glucose meter, a test strip, a lancet, and an alcohol prep pad). Second; turn on the glucose meter and place a test strip in the machine. Third; dry and wipe the area you've selected with an alcohol prep pad and wait until the alcohol evaporates the pierce your fingertip on the side of your fingertip. Lastly, place a drop of blood on or at the side of the strip. A well balanced diet with minimal carbs, sodium and sugars can help manage symptoms of diabetes. Also, severing someone and appropriate portion is also helpful. Anything can be considered doable if given in moderation.
