All of us need food to keep us alive and healthy. However, food can also make us sick if it is not prepared and/or served properly. As a direct care professional it is important to make sure people don't get sick from the foods and drinks you prepare and serve them. Hands that are not thoroughly washed are one of the main reasons why people get sick from the food they eat. This can be prevented by washing your hands often! (Especially during this time that we are in with the Covid-19 pandemic, we realize the importance of washing our hands multiple times in a day.)

Food preparation is extremely important. The kitchen is one of the areas where germs thrive the most. Keep all your utensils clean each time you start and stop food prep. 1. Keep your hands clean by washing thoroughly and properly for 20 seconds. Dry your hands with paper towels. (Not towels) 2. Make sure anyone entering the kitchen follow the same rules, this ensures cleanliness in your kitchen work space. 3. Cross contamination can be dangerous. Continue to clean all fruits and vegetables, using different cutting utensils and or sanitize after each use. 4. Cover your hair and beards while preparing food. 5. Lather your hands and arms up to your elbows with soap for 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice). Wash the backs of your hands and wrists, between fingers, and under fingernails using a nailbrush. Rinse your hands and arms under warm running water. Use a paper towel to turn off the water.
